Container Gardening Made Easy!

Not everyone has a green thumb, but that doesn’t mean you can’t enjoy the beauty of fresh flowers and plants in your home. Container gardens are easy to care for and make a great addition to any indoor or outdoor space. Need some tips on how to create your own container garden? Whether you’re looking for a low-maintenance option or want to get creative with planting containers, there are options available.

Pick the right container

Choosing the right container for your plants is crucial to having a healthy, thriving garden. After all, if the container is too small, your plants won’t reach their full potential in terms of growth and health. Make sure that you opt for a container with sufficient drainage holes so as not to drown the roots. Also, consider the material of your vessel. A terracotta pot may look beautiful, but such pots are porous and can lead to heat transfer, which can cause dehydration and other problems for your plants. Alternatively, plastic pots retain moisture more than terracotta, so make sure to use these guidelines when selecting the best material for your garden.

Choose plants that will do well

When you are selecting plants for your garden, the climate and amount of sunlight they will receive should be important deciding factors. Knowing your hardiness zone is key to choosing plants that won’t struggle to survive after you’ve diligently put them in their new homes. Growing plants that are well-suited to your environment will be much more rewarding than pushing the limits with something that won’t adapt quickly and easily, making extra work for you as a gardener. Take the time to research what does best before purchasing or planting.

Make sure to water your plants regularly

Taking care of plants is a rewarding experience, but it can also be challenging. During hot weather, they need extra attention in order to thrive. It’s essential to water your plants on a regular basis so that their soil doesn’t dry out. When the temperature rises, evaporation speeds up, and your plants might need more frequent watering. Since no two plants are the same, make sure to check your specific species for how much water they require. Over-watering is just as bad as not watering enough. Get acquainted with the nuances of caring for your particular plants to ensure healthy growth and vibrant blooms.

Add some mulch

Adding mulch to the top of your containers is a great way to keep weeds at bay and ensure that moisture is retained in the soil. Mulch provides several benefits to plants, such as reducing water loss due to evaporation, improving soil fertility by providing organic matter, controlling temperature fluctuations, reducing soil compaction, and helping keep unwanted weed growth to a minimum manageable level.

Enjoy your beautiful container garden!

No matter how small the space you have available, you can create a stunning display of plants, flowers, and foliage to admire. The trick is combining size, color, texture, and shape for a unique look that will catch your eye every time you glance out the window! Additionally, think about changing out your containers seasonally to match the weather and temperatures – along with giving your eye something new to enjoy!

By following these simple tips, you can create a beautiful and sustainable container garden that will thrive for seasons to come. So grab your gardening gloves and get started!

Try These Things for a Great Smelling Home

We all want our homes to smell great, but sometimes it can be hard – between cooking smells or pets or a bag of trash that has stayed just a little too long. Whether you’re trying to eliminate bad odors or just create a pleasant atmosphere, these tips and tricks will help you get the job done. With a little bit of effort, your home can smell amazing in no time!

Open up all the windows

Opening up the windows in your home is an easy way to let fresh air circulate and get rid of some of the musty odors that might be lingering. It only takes a few hours – so why not make it a regular thing? Additionally, opening up the windows helps brighten up areas around your home. Rooms such as the kitchen, living room, bedroom, and bathroom benefit from letting some sunlight shine in while airing out any stale air. So if you’re looking for a simple solution to refresh your home, try opening the windows once each week!

Mop your floors often

Keeping your floors clean and free from bacteria is important for a healthy home. An effective way to keep them looking their best is by frequently mopping them with a vinegar and water solution. Vinegar is renowned for its disinfecting properties, and adding it to the mop water can help prevent the spread of harmful germs in your living space. As an added bonus, vinegar also doubles as a natural deodorizer, leaving you with sparkling floors that smell great too! So don’t forget – keep your home clean and healthy by mopping your floors often using a vinegar and water solution.

Place bowls of baking soda in strategic locations

Research has proven that absorbing odors can be as easy as finding the right spot for a bowl of baking soda. Seemingly small and inexpensive, these bowls offer big results in the form of eliminating pesky odors from all kinds of sources. From the smell of smoke to pet odors, placing bowls of baking soda in problem areas around your home can help keep your indoor air fresh and clean. No matter how badly a room may smell now, it could rapidly become more inviting with something as simple as a few sprinkles of baking soda!

Keep fresh flowers or potpourri around

Adding a pleasant scent to the air with fresh flowers or potpourri is a simple yet effective way to improve the smell of your home. Whether you choose roses from your local florist, or the prettiest lavender from your garden, having fresh blossoms or fragrant herbs around can truly make your home smell fantastic. And, you can also switch things up by choosing new flowers or new potpourri scents whenever you choose.

Clean your garbage cans regularly

Keeping garbage cans clean is one of the most important steps in maintaining a pleasant-smelling home. Taking time to empty and wash the cans every couple of weeks (or more often if needed) can make a big difference. It not only prevents an accumulation of dirt and food scraps, but it also helps keep odors at bay. If necessary, using an air freshener inside the garbage can after cleaning can help neutralize any lingering smells and keep your home smelling fresh. As a bonus, making it a regular part of your cleaning routine ensures you don’t forget this important task!

Implementing these simple tips will help keep your home smelling fresh and clean all year round. What other tips do you have for keeping your home smelling great?

Create Your Perfect Home Office

Having your own dedicated home office is a great way to increase your productivity and get more done. Whether you’re working from home full-time or just want an organized spot to do occasional tasks, having a well-designed home office can make all the difference between getting things done quickly and easily and feeling overwhelmed by clutter. But what essential elements are needed to create the perfect space to meet your needs? Here are some tips so that you’ll soon have a workspace that boosts both creativity and focus!

Natural Light

Everyone can benefit from more natural light in their workspace, especially if that workspace is their home. Natural light brings with it several advantages; it helps boost work morale, since being exposed to natural sunlight releases endorphins which increase happiness. Additionally, natural light reduces eye strain and promotes healthy vitamin D production, allowing us to stay productive during the day without tiring quickly. If you’re able to, windows in your home office can be very beneficial.

Choose a Space Where It’s Quiet

Having a quiet home office is essential to getting work done efficiently. It’s hard to focus when your office is constantly bombarded with conversations, televisions, and animals barking. Taking the time to make your home office as peaceful as possible helps you concentrate and stay inspired.

Ergonomic Furniture

When it comes to your home office, ergonomic furniture isn’t just a luxury – it’s a requirement for optimal productivity. Ergonomic chairs and desks help your body stay comfortable and supported while you work, eliminating pain and distraction caused by sitting in awkward positions or using incorrect posture. With the right ergonomic furniture, you can keep your spine in good alignment while maintaining a healthy working environment. Take the time to research and purchase good quality pieces that will last you many years, helping to make your home office more efficient and enjoyable.

Pick Some Great Storage Solutions

A great home office needs to be organized in order to be productive. Fortunately, there are many storage solutions out there that you can use to create some much-needed order in the space. From stackable containers to wall shelves and filing cabinets, you can find something to suit your individual needs and preferences. Consider adding pegboards with hooks for hanging items like whiteboards and paintings, as well as rolling bins that bring storage right up to your desk itself. The right type of storage will mean everything has a place so that nothing gets lost or forgotten in the shuffle. With a few clever solutions, your workspace will look neat and tidy while keeping all of your important documents on hand whenever you need them.

Personal Touches Are Important

Adding personal touches to your home office can be an enjoyable and creative way to turn your workspace into a place you enjoy going to. Incorporate items, such as photos or artwork, that bring you joy into the space. A comfortable chair is essential for working at home, and adding throw pillows or fuzzy blankets can help keep you cozy while working those long hours. Greenery can also add a breath of fresh air to your office and provide an inviting feeling you’ll love returning to every day. With these easy steps, you’ll have a home office that’s both chic and unique.

Whether you’re looking to set up a new home office or upgrade your current space, following these simple tips will help you create a productive and inspiring environment that’s perfect for getting work done. And who knows, with a little bit of planning and effort, maybe your home office will even become the envy of your coworkers.

The Villa by Rachel Hawkins (January 3, 2023)

As kids, Emily and Chess were inseparable. But by their 30s, their bond has been strained by the demands of their adult lives. So when Chess suggests a girls trip to Italy, Emily jumps at the chance to reconnect with her best friend.

Villa Aestas in Orvieto is a high-end holiday home now, but in 1974, it was known as Villa Rosato, and rented for the summer by a notorious rock star, Noel Gordon. In an attempt to reignite his creative spark, Noel invites up-and-coming musician, Pierce Sheldon to join him, as well as Pierce’s girlfriend, Mari, and her stepsister, Lara. But he also sets in motion a chain of events that leads to Mari writing one of the greatest horror novels of all time, Lara composing a platinum album––and ends in Pierce’s brutal murder.

As Emily digs into the villa’s complicated history, she begins to think there might be more to the story of that fateful summer in 1974. That perhaps Pierce’s murder wasn’t just a tale of sex, drugs, and rock & roll gone wrong, but that something more sinister might have occurred––and that there might be clues hidden in the now-iconic works that Mari and Lara left behind.

Yet the closer that Emily gets to the truth, the more tension she feels developing between her and Chess. As secrets from the past come to light, equally dangerous betrayals from the present also emerge––and it begins to look like the villa will claim another victim before the summer ends.

Happy Place by Emily Henry (April 25, 2023)

Harriet and Wyn have been the perfect couple since they met in college—they go together like salt and pepper, honey and tea, lobster and rolls. Except, now—for reasons they’re still not discussing—they don’t.

They broke up five months ago. And still haven’t told their best friends.

Which is how they find themselves sharing a bedroom at the Maine cottage that has been their friend group’s yearly getaway for the last decade. Their annual respite from the world, where for one vibrant, blissful week they leave behind their daily lives; have copious amounts of cheese, wine, and seafood; and soak up the salty coastal air with the people who understand them most.

Only this year, Harriet and Wyn are lying through their teeth while trying not to notice how desperately they still want each other. Because the cottage is for sale and this is the last week they’ll all have together in this place. They can’t stand to break their friends’ hearts, and so they’ll play their parts. Harriet will be the driven surgical resident who never starts a fight, and Wyn will be the laid-back charmer who never lets the cracks show. It’s a flawless plan (if you look at it from a great distance and through a pair of sunscreen-smeared sunglasses). After years of being in love, how hard can it be to fake it for one week…in front of those who know you best?

How to Sell a Haunted House by Grady Hendrix (January 17, 2023)

When Louise finds out her parents have died, she dreads going home. She doesn’t want to leave her daughter with her ex and fly to Charleston. She doesn’t want to deal with her family home, stuffed to the rafters with the remnants of her father’s academic career and her mother’s lifelong obsession with puppets and dolls. She doesn’t want to learn how to live without the two people who knew and loved her best in the world.

Most of all, she doesn’t want to deal with her brother, Mark, who never left their hometown, gets fired from one job after another, and resents her success. Unfortunately, she’ll need his help to get the house ready for sale because it’ll take more than some new paint on the walls and clearing out a lifetime of memories to get this place on the market.

But some houses don’t want to be sold, and their home has other plans for both of them…

Meet Me at the Lake by Carley Fortune (May 2, 2023)

Fern Brookbanks has wasted far too much of her adult life thinking about Will Baxter. She spent just twenty-four hours in her early twenties with the aggravatingly attractive, idealistic artist, a chance encounter that spiraled into a daylong adventure in the city. The timing was wrong, but their connection was undeniable: they shared every secret, every dream, and made a pact to meet one year later. Fern showed up. Will didn’t.

At thirty-two, Fern’s life doesn’t look at all how she once imagined it would. Instead of living in the city, Fern’s back home, running her mother’s lakeside resort—something she vowed never to do. The place is in disarray, her ex-boyfriend’s the manager, and Fern doesn’t know where to begin.

She needs a plan—a lifeline. To her surprise, it comes in the form of Will, who arrives nine years too late, with a suitcase in tow and an offer to help on his lips. Will may be the only person who understands what Fern’s going through. But how could she possibly trust this expensive-suit wearing mirage who seems nothing like the young man she met all those years ago. Will is hiding something, and Fern’s not sure she wants to know what it is.

But ten years ago, Will Baxter rescued Fern. Can she do the same for him?

There are a lot of new books coming out in 2023 and these are just a few of the ones to get excited for! Check them out and share which ones you’re most looking forward to reading.

How Best to Help Aging Parents

As our parents age, it’s only natural that we want to do everything we can to help them. But sometimes it’s hard to know what the best way to help is. If you’re looking for ideas, read as  we explore some of the best ways you can help your aging parents live a happy, healthy, and comfortable life.

Talk to your siblings: If you have siblings, now is the time to have a conversation about who is going to help out and how often. It’s important to make sure that everyone is on the same page so that your parents are getting the care they need without any one person feeling overburdened.

Communication is key: Talk to your parents about their needs and concerns. If they’re reluctant to talk, try asking indirect questions about their health, their daily routine, or their social life. See if there are any areas where they could use some help. It could be something as simple as grocery shopping or getting to doctor’s appointments. Once you know what they need, you can start making plans to help out.

Help them stay active and social: One of the best ways you can help your aging parents is by helping them to stay active and social. As we age, it’s easy to become isolated and lonely. Help your parents stay connected with friends and family by setting up regular phone calls or video chats. Plan outings and activities, even if it’s just a walk around the block or a trip to the grocery store. Keeping active will help your parents maintain their independence for longer.

Hire outside help: If you live far away from your parents or if you have a lot of other commitments, it might be necessary to hire someone to help care for them. This can be anything from a part-time caregiver to a full-time nurse. Do your research to find someone who will be a good fit for your family and make sure to communicate your expectations clearly.

Help with their finances: Another way you can help your aging parents is by helping them with their finances. This may include helping them to pay bills, budget, or invest their money wisely. Many seniors are targeted by scammers who try to take advantage of their financial situation. You can help protect your parents by keeping an eye out for red flags like unexpected calls or emails asking for personal information or money.

Be there for them emotionally: As our parents age, they may experience feelings of sadness, loneliness, anxiety, or fear. Just being there to listen and offer support can be a big help. If you think your parents are experiencing depression, you can contact their doctor or the National Institute on Aging at 1-800-222-2225 for more information and resources.

Utilize your resources: There are many resources available to help you care for aging parents. Look into government programs like Medicare or Medicaid, or search for private organizations that offer support. There are often community groups that can provide transportation or meals, or put you in touch with other families who are dealing with similar issues. Don’t hesitate to ask for help when you need it.

Be respectful: No matter what situation you’re in, it’s important to always be respectful of your parents’ wishes. If they don’t want help with certain things, respect their wishes and don’t try to force anything on them.

There are many ways you can help your aging parents live a happy, healthy, and comfortable life. The best way to help is often dependent on the individual needs of your parents. By staying active and social, helping with finances, and being there emotionally, you can make a big difference in your parent’s life as they age.

Although the German-born illusionists and pop culture icons were mega-famous, much about their private lives, eccentric public personae, and tragic final show remained shrouded in mystery…until now. Emmy®-winning filmmaker and journalist Steven Leckart, in his very first podcast, takes you behind the velvet curtain to reveal shocking moments, surprising details, and hidden truths about two men who were lionized by millions of fans, lampooned by the media, criticized by animal welfare advocates, and endlessly scrutinized by the public.

She told friends and coworkers she was trapped in abusive relationships, or that she was the mother of children who had died. It was all a con. The Trojan Horse Affair

A strange letter appears on a city councillor’s desk in Birmingham, England, laying out an elaborate plot by Islamic extremists to infiltrate the city’s schools. The plot has a code name: Operation Trojan Horse. The story soon explodes in the news and kicks off a national panic. By the time it all dies down, the government has launched multiple investigations, beefed up the country’s counterterrorism policy, revamped schools and banned people from education for the rest of their lives.

To Hamza Syed, who is watching the scandal unfold in his city, the whole thing seemed … off. Because through all the official inquiries and heated speeches in Parliament, no one has ever bothered to answer a basic question: Who wrote the letter? And why? The night before Hamza is to start journalism school, he has a chance meeting in Birmingham with the reporter Brian Reed, the host of the hit podcast S-Town. Together they team up to investigate: Who wrote the Trojan Horse letter? They quickly discover that it’s a question people in power do not want them asking.
